Government and the private sector have to expeditiously implement the National Disability Policy (NDP) to guarantee inclusion of people living with disabilities in economic activities, the National Association of Societies for the Care of the Handicapped (NASCOH) has said.
The NDP, which was recently launched by President Mnangagwa, is expected to create equal employment opportunities for people living with disabilities.
NASCOH executive director Henry Masaya said: “The disability policy is not for people with disabilities alone but everyone else should be aware of and comply with; this is how it can effectively be implemented.
“Employers should observe the principle of equal pay for equal work for people with disabilities and provide them with vocational and professional rehabilitation.
“Persons with disabilities should also freely choose places they want to live and not be forced to live in particular arrangements or institutions.”
Non-governmental organisation (NGO) Signs of Hope Trust director Samantha Sibanda said the policy should be implemented at organisational level.
The NDP provides for equal access to employment for persons with disabilities and a 15 percent employment stake in both the private and private sector.
It also provides for the integration of persons with disabilities into communities.
