NEW: HCC struggles to maintain drainage system

Harare City Council (HCC) is struggling to maintain the capital city’s drainage system, as it is operating with one pneumatic truck – currently not operational – against the required 20.

Harare, particularly the central business district (CBD), risks flooding due to a clogged drainage system.

Addressing a full council meeting on Wednesday, Engineer Gerald Mutume – representing acting director of works, Engineer Norman Karidza – said the local authority has one truck which is currently not working.

“Your Worship, currently we have just one truck, which broke down a long time ago,” he said.

“In order for us to be fully functional, we need to have at least 20 trucks for our city.”
