DESIGN experts are seeing plenty of home trends that take on a new and modern look. They are also looking for something that gives a rustic and nostalgic appeal. We picked some of our favourite trends that experts say are big.

Viva Magenta

One of the best aspects of interior design is getting creative and experimenting with new colours. Viva Magenta, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2023, is a bold colour that pops with personality. As a colour descendant of the red family, Viva Magenta evokes strength, bravery and passion. If painting your walls a shade of red feels a bit too “out there” for you, try incorporating shades of this colour in your furniture and home decor. Daring designers can harness the full power of the colour of the year as a velvet couch or lacquered wall. Those who desire a more neutral home can use it as a pop of colour.

Granny chic

Nostalgia as a trend often takes on different meanings. However, for this year, nostalgia takes the form of granny chic. Yes, decor you may have quite literally seen in your grandparents’ house, like floral wallpaper, during your childhood, is coming back in style. The rise in thrifting is prompting the blending of old and new furniture pieces. This is partially due to the rise in sustainability and wanting to have a furniture piece that has a story to tell.

Artisan pieces and sustainability

Craft-related projects and hobbies have become more popular in recent years. Because of this, a lot of us have a new appreciation for artisan and hand-crafted pieces.

Neutrals and earthy colours

After the seemingly unpredictable nature of the past few years, it is no surprise that neutral and earthy colours are making a comeback. Light shades of cream, grey, brown, green and yellow are all comforting wall colours that also bring us back to nature. Pairing statement colour furniture like purple, orange and dark blue with neutrals is not out of the question either.

It is no surprise that multi-purpose spaces are becoming a trend. You can utilise your indoor space much better by turning rooms in your home into multi-purpose rooms. Open floor plans may be in, but many are looking for ways to create invisible boundaries and influence distinct multifunctional spaces.

Some of the more recent popular trends we have seen in creating separate areas within large, open floor plans include using furniture for division, investing in dividers and making invisible lines with colour. Have your living room double as a home gym or office space. If your guestroom sits empty when no one is occupying it, why not use some of the empty space in there for something else? Set up an extra computer room, a craft spot or move your gym or office equipment into the guestroom as well.

Arches

One of the latest trends in interior design is incorporating arches into your home. Arch-shaped doorways and windows make spaces feel more connected but also still separate at the same time, creating a solid middle ground. Following a trend towards sleek, minimalist interiors, modern buildings have tended to shy away from arches, instead opting for plain walls, rectangular doorways and open-plan spaces.

However, indoor arches are making a comeback, particularly in the popular Scandi and Japandi trends that have emerged over recent years. Having arch-shaped doorways installed in your home can be expensive and out of the question for some. But you can try adding arch patterns into your home in smaller, subtler ways through arched mirrors, window treatments, curvier furniture and arched decor pieces.

Smart home integration

Incorporating smart home gadgets into your interior design is a smart move. Traditional interior design and decor has emphasised furniture, texture and colour. These elements are still just as important as ever, but the digital landscape has made incorporating high-tech furniture and features into the design another priority for many homeowners.
