THE Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services has developed a five-year strategic plan that will revolutionise Government services and bring connectivity to under-served rural communities, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Speaking at the ICT conference and awards on Thursday, ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere, said Zimbabwe’s economic resilience and competitiveness lies in digitalisation, and therefore calls for the adoption of emerging technologies, including 5G technology.
“5G is a growth engine for the Zimbabwean economy and our goal is to create an ecosystem of innovation. 5G technology will encourage the deployment of advanced infrastructure and positively affect our gross domestic product (GDP).
Dr Muswere said his Ministry has already started rolling out the 5G network, which is ultra-fast with peak data rates of up to 100 times faster than the 4G network.
“For individuals, in a 5G world, it will take us seconds to download a typical high-definition movie, whereas it takes minutes today. For gamers, 5G’s lower latency will let you enjoy almost instant response times.
“But 5G is not just for fun and recreation. For example, in telemedicine today, we can consult a doctor anywhere in the world through a video call over the Internet. But, the connection is still not good enough for that doctor to perform surgery remotely. 5G will change that,” he said.
