A local organisation – Unassailable – is helping women protect themselves by providing them with self-defence kits and psychological support in the wake of rising domestic violence cases during the Covid-19 induced national lockdowns.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail, the founder of Unassailable, Ms Deone Dingwiza, said the organisation has come up with a support group consisting of psychologists, therapists and counsellors to help women.
“We offer self-defence classes conducted by fitness trainers and martial artists. Not only do we focus on the physical mishaps, we also deal with the traumatising experience that they would have gone through be it violence, child abuse or rape,” she said.
Ms Dingwiza said it was disconcerting that many women had experienced some form of sexual and physical abuse from close family members or work colleagues during the lockdowns.
She urged women to have self-defence kits in case they get involved in dangerous situations.
“Even if you’re prepared, anything can happen at any time in any place. So what do we do? We give ourselves the best chance of survival by arming ourselves with the most modern, practical, effective self-defence weapons on the market today.
“We offer different items like safety locks, stun guns, Pepper spray, chapstick, whistles and torches and we believe these will help women to be vigilant when push comes to shove,” she said.
