The High Court has reserved judgement in a case in which the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has taken police to court for allegedly fining hitch-hikers who use unauthorised transport in urban areas.
Police were accused of arresting and fining $2 000 for boarding unauthorised buses, kombis and ‘mushika-shika’ in contravention of Section 7 (2), as read with 49 (2) of the Road Traffic Regulations of 2016.
PAZ, with the assistance of the Human Rights NGO Forum, approached the High Court challenging the arrests.
In a notice on Thursday, PAZ said: “Judgement has been reserved in the case in which we are challenging the Zimbabwe Republic Police in carrying out mass arrests of passengers who are found on board private vehicles and fining each $2000 for boarding transport which is not under Zupco. They will notify us when the judgement is ready.”
