NEW: Kundai Benyu talks up Vic Falls, World Cup

Langton Nyakwenda

THE past week has been hectic for Kundai Benyu.

The Warriors midfielder is back in Zimbabwe and has a lot on his itinerary.

Apart from following the ongoing World Cup, Benyu – who was born and raised in England – has been visiting relatives and local restaurants.

Many local fans still remember him for his gutsy performances at the 2021 African Cup of Nations finals, which were held in Cameroon earlier this year.

He was one of the outstanding performers for Zimbabwe, yet his inclusion in the squad had raised eyebrows.

Those murmurs turned out to be his greatest motivation.

“When I was called up for the Warriors, people talked a lot, with some questioning my inclusion. Some were actually confused as to why I was called up.

“And that motivated me to do well, as I wanted to prove my doubters wrong,” the 24-year-old midfielder told The Sunday Mail Online.

Benyu plays for Iceland top flight side, IBV, but has attracted some interest from some English clubs.

He is a former Celtic player, and once charmed Brendan Rodgers, who described him as a bright prospect when he was still in charge of the Scottish giants.

That was before Benyu’s career took a downturn, as he ended up playing for lower division sides, including Wealdstone.

He also had a stint in Norway with Helsingborgs IF and he is now trying to work his way back with IBV of Iceland.

“The season has been tough, as I suffered injuries, but I can say I am back now,” he said.

“I am focusing on my football, because I know my past hasn’t been that good. What I know is I will soon realise my full potential.”

He is back in Zimbabwe, and among his holiday plans is a visit to the majestic Victoria Falls.

“Victoria Falls is an iconic destination,” he said.

“If you talk about Zimbabwe, back in Europe, most people will say one of two things – Zimbabwe is hot and there is Victoria Falls.”

Benyu has also been following the World Cup, and is tipping either Brazil or Argentina to lift the trophy.

“All the teams in the last eight have a chance, but for me it’s Argentina.

“They have Lionel Messi, and will obviously have an edge.

“Brazil is also good. I grew up watching a lot of stars from that country and also like them.”
