ZIMBABWE women’s Under-19 coach, Trevor Phiri, has expressed satisfaction with his charge’s progress in India, where the team is currently camped as part of their preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.
While the batting continues to be a bit of a struggle, Phiri is happy with the team’s progression in other departments.
“The camp is going according to the plan. We are working hard to make sure that we maximise the time we are left with, to rectify any outstanding areas of concern.
“We have done pretty well with the ball and in the fielding department, but have fallen short when it comes to the batting. Going forward, we need to work on our batting,” said Phiri.
“These camps are important to us, as they give us time to see and try different combinations in the batting and bowling departments.
“We want to make sure that we are playing competitive cricket at the end of the day.”
The squad in India currently comprises 19 players, but only 15 will travel to South Africa for the T20 World Cup.
“Four players from the team that has traveled with us, will not be part of the squad to grace the World Cup, but we want them here to gain the confidence, exposure and experience for upcoming tournaments,” said the coach.
“International camps are important, because they teach players to adjust and adapt to different weather conditions and playing conditions.”
Phiri said Kelis Ndlovu and Michelle Mavunga, who have already had a dance with the senior team (Lady Chevrons), are a “great addition” to the team.
“I feel it (their addition) has been a big boost to the changing room, as they bring in experience, confidence, exposure, and leadership to the squad,” he said.
