OWEN Mapope, an aspiring sungura musician who has two albums to his credit, has hailed the work that is being done by Mutare-based music producer Peter Muparutsa.
As one of the founding members of the Runn Family Band, 63-year-old Muparutsa – a living legend – is one of the local pioneers of contemporary music in the 1970s.
A security guard-cum-musician, Mapope, who fronts the six-member Mapope Sounds, is grateful to Muparutsa for showing him the way.
“Peter has had a hand in all the two albums that I have so far produced.
“Apart from recording the albums, he also played drums during the recordings.
“He is my teacher and advisor,” Mapope said.
Mapope Sounds is made up of Mapope’s wife, Yolanda Tome, and mostly session musicians such as Willard Matsiya and Noah Sikwenda, who mostly work with Hosiah Chipanga and musician Dorcas Moyo, respectively.
Mapope’s debut album, “Roora”, did well on both the National FM and Diamond FM chart shows.
His second production, “Zipi”, also received fair airplay.
