Three armed robbers, part of a six-member gang terrorising people in Harare, have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court after they were convicted of robbing and killing a motorist in Waterfalls.
The victim was hijacked at Machipisa Shopping Centre in Highfield.
High Court Judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi sentenced Godfrey Marowa, Trymore Tirivavi, and David Mupandawana to life imprisonment for the murder of David Chimbambo in November 2022.
The court heard that on the night in question, Chimbambo left his residence intending to park his Honda Fit at a secured parking lot.
He was distracted by a crowd of commuters desperately seeking transport from Machipisa to Harare’s city centre.
Chimbambo abandoned his parking plans, loaded the commuters into his car and headed for the city centre.
The gang approached him while he was parked at the corner of Fidel Castro (formerly Charter Road) and Mbuya Nehanda Street, pretending they needed transport to Highfield.
On their way to Machipisa, Tirivavi and Mupandawana requested to be dropped off at Zuva Service Station, opposite the Zimbabwe Grounds, claiming they had reached their destination.
The gang then hijacked his car, drove to Waterfalls, strangled him and dumped his body.
They subsequently used his car to commit a series of robberies.
Their luck ran out after executing the last robbery when Marowa failed to escape and was apprehended by the public and the victims of the robbery.
Marowa’s arrest led to the apprehension of his co-accused.
