NEW: Mafume sends commission of inquiry on a fool’s errand

RETIRED High Court judge Justice Maphios Cheda, who is chairing the commission of inquiry into the affairs of Harare City Council since 2017, has ruled that Mayor Jacob Mafume misled them when they inquired about his place of residence.

Mafume initially told the commission that he resides at his privately owned property in Belvedere, before later claiming he resides in Greendale at number 110 Coronation.

His failure to tell the commission his actual place of residence prompted the inquiry to take an inspection in loco.

It was, however, established that the Greendale address is being used by one Peter Pfukwa as a garage.

In his ruling, Justice Cheda noted that Mafume misled the commission.

“The commission, in the company of evidence leaders, witness Mafume and the Press went for an inspection in loco,” said Justice Cheda.

“The commission found indeed there is 110 Coronation, which is a residential address and property is a developed stand with corrugated gates which is used as an office by Mr Pfukwa Kapton Auctioneers.

“He does not reside there, and he confirmed. Therefore, the evidence he gave about his evidence was misleading in the circumstances.”

Mafume will appear again before the commission on Thursday morning.
