New Magwegwe man convicted for raping maid

A 27-YEAR-OLD man from New Magwegwe suburb in Bulawayo has been arrested for raping his 20-year-old maid.

For the offence, he (name withheld) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Sekai Benhilda Chiwundura facing one count of rape and one count of indecent assault.

He pleaded not guilty but was convicted after a full trial and remanded in custody for sentencing.

Circumstances are that on an unknown date but sometime in July 2024 the accused’s wife was admitted at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) after she gave birth. During her admission, she was in the company of the accused’s aunt who stays in Pumula.

The court heard that the accused told the complainant to prepare so he could drop her in Pumula at his aunt’s house so that she could take care of her daughter.

It was heard that on the way the accused drove a few metres from his place, parked on a road and started caressing the complainant’s body while also fondling her breasts. After the act, they drove home where the complainant called her aunt and narrated the ordeal.

The court further heard that on 22 July 2024 at around 8pm, the accused and complainant left the home en route to UBH to visit the accused’s wife.  Upon arrival, the complainant went to visit his wife while the complainant remained behind.

He returned around midnight and drove towards a secluded place along Victoria-Falls road where he threatened to kill her if she refused to have sex with him.  He then forced her to remove her clothes and lay on the front seat of his car and raped her.

It was heard that after committing the crime the accused drove to his house.  The matter came to light when the complainant called her aunt who along with the complainant reported the matter to the police.
