A MARRIED man from Bulawayo ran berserk, assaulted and killed his girlfriend after she refused to answer a call from an unknown number.
Moses Remayi recently appeared before Bulawayo High Court Judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa facing a charge of murder.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge but was convicted after a full trial. He was sentenced to an effective 18-year jail sentence. In his defence, Remayi claimed that he was angered by his girlfriend’s reaction to an anonymous call.
“I was having a conversation with my girlfriend when her phone rang. l enquired about the details of the caller. She claimed that it was her brother, David Dlamini. She refused to answer the call and threw the cell phone on the floor. I dialled the number using my phone and it was answered by a man and this angered me as l felt that the deceased was cheating on me,” he said.
Remayi stated that this resulted in a misunderstanding between the two.
“A fight ensured between us and the deceased started biting my hand and arm. She hit her head on the toilet door and the wall. When we were outside the house, l hit the deceased with a steel chair on her body and she fell face down and injured her forehead but l had no intention to kill her,” he said.
However, the court heard that on 16 October 2022 at around 7 pm, Remayi and the now deceased had a misunderstanding which led to the assault. A co-tenant, Evidence Denhere heard some screams from the victim’s room and knocked on the door in a bid to stop the couple from fighting.
She proceeded to the window and pleaded with Remayi to stop assaulting the victim. However, he continued the assault, indicating that no one could stop him as he had locked the door.
Denhere sought the help of other neighbours but to no avail. Remayi continued to assault the victim with booted feet, fists and an iron bar for close to an hour.
After a while, Remayi opened the door and left the victim outside, she was half-naked and bleeding profusely. One of the neighbours, Cynthia Chaleka saw the victim, took a blanket from her house and covered her.
The victim was taken to hospital for medical examination and she died after some days as a result of the assault. The matter was reported to the police and investigations were conducted leading to the arrest of the culprit and the recovery of the iron bar.
