NEW: Major-General Chiramba declared national hero

President Mnangagwa has conferred national hero status on Major-General Clever Shadreck Chiramba (Retired).

He made the announcement at the Chiramba residence in Hatfield on Thursday morning.

Major-General Chiramba succumbed to Covid-19- related complications at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on Sunday.

He was 66.

He was the Commander of Two Infantry Brigade during the DRC Campaign and retired from active service in 2004.

Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and service chiefs accompanied the President.

Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
