THIRTY-TWO farmers from Makoni District received certificates in animal health and production at a ceremony held at Makoni Farm on Tuesday.
This follows the completion of a three-month course conducted by the Department of Veterinary Services, in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development.
The training equips farmers with information on livestock health and production.
Presenting certificates to graduates, permanent secretary in the Ministry, Dr John Basera, said the Government aims to empower small-holder farmers to become large-scale breeders.
“In the Livestock Recovery and Growth Plan, we are aiming at empowering every farmer with much-needed support, such as knowledge, skills and financial backing,” he said.
“These programmes must continue until every household has enough knowledge in all facets of agriculture, including livestock production.”
Department of Veterinary Services chief director, Dr Josphat Nyika, said empowerment begins with giving the farmer knowledge.
“Knowledge is power. I can now safely say our livestock are in safe hands after these farmers’ graduation,” he said.
Among the graduates was Ms Rosemary Kaunyanya who said:
“I used to think livestock production was only for wealthy people, but from this course, I now understand that I can grow to be one of those big producers.”
