FINAL touches on two model houses that are being constructed for people with disabilities and albinism are nearing construction in Kadoma, Mashonaland West province, less than a year after beneficiaries received their stands.
Beneficiaries, who included 10 persons with disabilities (PWDs) and five with albinism, received 15 residential stands at Holyland high-density surburb from real estate company Craft Properties on November 27 last year in a ceremony presided over by Minister of State for
Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo.
At the time, Miniter Chombo challenged other private companies, local businesses, civic organisations and stakeholders to help build the homes at the donated properties.
However, the real estate company solely funded the project and began construction.
Sanyati District Development Coordinator Mr Amigo Mhlanga said the project had “exceeded expectations”.
“I do not know how to thank Professor (Kudakwashe) Taruberekera (CEO of Craft Properties) and his team; they have exceeded my expectations,” he said.
“I, however, still appeal to other stakeholders to come on board and complement their noble efforts by helping in the construction of the remaining 13 units.
“It is my wish that we do not overburden this company. Remember, they are the ones who gave us the 15 stands, and it is heartening to see them completing these houses with modern finishes. I am still positive we will get other entities on board to prove that nyika inovakwa nevene vayo (a country is built by its people).”
The houses are currently being roofed, while tiling, electrical and plumbing fittings are being installed simultaneously.
The kitchens, separate bathrooms and toilets all feature modern wall and floor tiling.
Accessibility features including wider doorways and adapted bathroom fittings have also been incorporated to ensure the homes are inclusive.
Kadoma PWD chairperson Mr Moses Marufu fought back tears as he described the latest milestone.
“I surely could not believe my eyes when I saw the rooms being tiled. I expected basic structures, not these beautiful and luxury finishes,” he said.
“I can now rest easy, and I hope the remaining 13 beneficiaries will also receive this privilege.”
The initiative directly aligns with the National Disability Policy launched by President Mnangagwa, which mandates development without discrimination based on disability, gender, race or socio-economic status.
In the past 18 years, Craft Properties Holdings has constructed school blocks, donated wheelchairs in Kadoma and Masvingo, and paid school fees for vulnerable children nationwide, among other initiatives meant to give back to the community.
“We are happy with the progress we have made thus far,” said Prof Taruberekera.
“It is not that we have resources in abundance, but it is within our hearts and minds to share the little we have to support Government initiatives and President Mnangagwa’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind.”
