Online Reporter

President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi has arrived at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport ahead of the 44th SADC Summit for Heads of State and Government on Saturday.

President Chakwera was received by the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Honourable Ziyambi Ziyambi.

During a meeting of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) National Planning Entities (NPEs) Platform that took place in Gaborone, Botswana in July 2023, Malawi was appointed champion of the Platform.

The NPEs Platform is a collection of national planning commissions and planning ministries in SADC. This group is important in ensuring that priorities agreed by the SADC leadership which form part of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) are domesticated and tracked for progress at country level, including building the member states’ capacity in that regard.

Malawi is a founding member of SADC and joined the regional bloc at its formation as the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) in Lusaka, Zambia, in April 1980.

Covering an area of 118 484 square kilometres, Malawi is a neighbour to Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia.

English is the official and business language in Malawi, with Chichewa being the national language widely spoken in the country.

As of 2022, the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Malawi was approximately US$13,16 billion.
