WATER levels in the country’s major dams continue rising following the rainfall activity being experienced in some parts of the country, with one dam in Maniacaland Province filled to capacity while three others are over 75 percent full and one close to being half full, the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has said.

Rusape Dam, which falls under Save catchment area, is full to capacity and already spilling, while Osborne, Marovanyati, Ruti and Siya dams are 87.5, 82.8, 76.8 and 48.4 percent full respectively.

In a statement, Zinwa said as of yesterday the national dam level average had risen to 87 percent, pointing to the improving water security for urban supply and irrigation agriculture.

“The national dam level average is significantly higher than the 66.6 percent expected during this period of the year. The number of dams filling up and spilling is also on the rise, with at least 48.3 percent of the major dams already spilling by February 2,” said Zinwa corporate communications and marketing manager Mrs Marjorie Munyonga.

Despite the increasing water levels in the dams, Zinwa urged customers to use water as sparingly as possible.

Added Mrs Munyonga: “Farmers and other raw water users intending to draw water from Zinwa dams in the coming irrigation season are, therefore, advised to start working on renewing or getting their water abstraction agreements in readiness for the season. The raw water users are advised to approach their nearest Zinwa offices for assistance as the water abstraction agreements allow the authority to efficiently allocate the available water among competing users.”
