HEAVY rain and flash flooding is expected in the southern and eastern parts of the country from today until next week Wednesday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned.

In a statement yesterday, the MSD said heavy rains in excess of 50mm with lightning and hailstorms will be received in some places.

The public has been warned to watch out for blown-off rooftops, loose debris and fallen tress due to strong winds.

“Considerable rainfall and localised downpours are probable in Manicaland, Mashonaland East, southern parts of Midlands, Matabeleland South, Harare Metropolitan Province as well as other areas . This may result in flash flooding and others hazards to watch out for include lightning, strong winds and localised hailstorms.

“Watch out for open drains and potholes that may be covered in water. Stay indoors during thunderstorms unless if it is an emergency,” said the MSD.

The MSD said the rain may affect outdoor activities and people should plan with that in mind.

Added the MSD: “Stay indoors during thunderstorms unless if it is an emergency. If travel is necessary, please, take caution on the roads as visibility may be reduced and there may be hidden flood dangers.”

The public has been warned to desist from crossing flooded rivers both on foot or in vehicles.
