PRESIDENT Mnangagwa yesterday conferred the late freedom fighter, Cde Samuel Walker Matimba with liberation war hero status.
Cde Matimba died on Sunday, aged 86.
Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, confirmed the development.
He said Cde Matimba is expected to be buried today at the Manicaland Provincial Heroes’ Acre.
Passing his condolences at the Matimba family home in Greenside, Mutare, Minister Mugadza said: “His Excellency, The President and First Secretary of Zanu PF, Cde Dr E.D Mnangagwa, has conferred liberation war hero status on the late Cde Samuel Walker Matimba who died on January 7 and will be buried at the Manicaland Provincial Heroes’ Acre in Mutare on January 10.
“The Matimba family will be contacted through the Manicaland provincial offices. So I have come to inform you that Sekuru Matimba is a liberation war hero, declared by President Mnangagwa and he will be buried at the Provincial Heroes’ Acre in agreement with his family.”
“Yes, we are mourning, but we are mainly celebrating his life,” added Minister Mugadza to thunderous rounds of applauses from the mourners.
Cde Matimba’s eldest daughter, Mrs Tanyaradzwa Chikanza, thanked President Mnangagwa and Government for honouring the late liberation war hero.
“We feel honoured that our late father has been recognised as a provincial hero. As a family, we are humbled by this gesture by President Mnangagwa and are grateful to the province and nation as a whole.
“Our father was a philanthropist who believed in assisting everyone to attain education, including his family, neighbours and the whole community,” she said.
