THE Hwata Trust – an organisation committed to preserving the legacy of Mbuya Nehanda – is considering constructing a museum dubbed the Mbuya Nehanda Reflective Centre in Mazowe, as part of preserving shrines where the revered spiritual leader lived.
According to the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe, Mazowe Valley is a cultural and historical landscape worthy of preservation, as it is the sacred sanctuary of the spirit of Mbuya Nehanda.
Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana – the spirit medium of Mbuya Nehanda – lived in Mazowe.
She was particularly famous for leading the first against colonial rule during the First Chimurenga of 1896-1897.
She was, however, captured and hanged by settler forces in 1898.
Her memory was influential in inspiring guerillas of the Second Chimurenga, which led to Independence.
Making a pitch during the Mazowe Business and Investment Conference in Mazowe last Friday, Hwata Trust spokesperson Professor Mark Zaranyika said it is befitting to construct the museum in Mazowe Valley.
“In 2007, we moved a motion in council for the area where Mbuya Nehanda lived to be made a national monument. This was approved,” he said.
“Mazowe Valley used to be the headquarters of the Vahera people, who were Mbuya Nehanda’s family. So, we want to build a structure called a Reflective Centre in Mazowe. This will chronicle the history of Mbuya Nehanda.
“It will be tourist site, where people can take part in various recreational activities, while getting to know the full history of Mbuya Nehanda.”
Several areas of historical significance in Mazowe, he added, have not been accorded the due recognition they deserve.
“We have the Baradzanwa site. This is the place where Mbuya Nehanda was separated from the people. Another special area is close to Mazowe Hotel, where the First Chimurenga actually started and the evidence remains today.
“In Christon Bank, there is also a sacred mountain. So, such areas are not being accorded the importance they deserve, so the museum will help to preserve this rich history.”
Prof Zaranyika said they also plan to set up a cultural village and game reserve stretching from Mazowe Dam.
Also speaking at the same conference, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Monica Mavhunga said: “Mazowe holds a special place in the province because it is the land of Mbuya Nehanda.
“We want to see Mazowe develop into a fully-fledged town, just like Mvurwi, which was previously part of Mazowe Rural District Council.”
