NEW: Measles: Manicaland tops in new cases

MANICALAND yesterday recorded 67 new cases of measles, the highest among all the country’s provinces; figures released by the Ministry of health and Child Care giving the daily update reveal.

 

This is more than six times the cases recorded in Harare Province, which had 11. Mashonaland East recorded seven new cases of measles, while the other provinces had none.

 

To date, Manicaland has recorded a cumulative total of 3 009 cases of measles. Of these, 507 were vaccinated while 1 982 where not inoculated. The vaccination status of 523 is unknown.

 

According to the figures, 1 574 people in the province have been discharged from hospital care while 1 088 are still admitted.

 

347 deaths from measles have been recorded in Manicaland since the outbreak of the disease. However, no deaths were recorded yesterday.

 

The Ministry of Health and Child Care said measles cases are mainly concentrated in the eastern part of the country.

 

Cumulatively, 47,8 percent of the cases recorded across the country have been reported from Manicaland Province.

 

According to the figures, males constitute 52,7 percent of the total cases.
