Farmers who have registered to grow tobacco have increased by 814 from last season to 80 314, latest figures from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) show.

The new season is expected to commence at the beginning of September.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, TIMB public affairs officer Mrs Chelesani Moyo said growers are making final preparations as they prepare for planting.

“As at August 16, 2022, total seed sales at Tobacco Research Board (TRB) and Zimbabwe Tobacco Seed Association (ZTSA) for flue-cured tobacco were 731 825kg covering 121 971 hectares,’’ she said.

Tobacco is one of Zimbabwe’s main foreign currency earners.
