ZIMBABWE Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) investigating officer handling the matter in which businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe allegedly misappropriated more than US$ 7 million earmarked for the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme, on Thursday told the Harare Regional Magistrate Court that the duo’s potential release on bail may cause public outcry.
Mpofu and Chimombe are being charged with fraud.
Testifying as a State witness in the duo’s ongoing bail application, ZACC investigating officer Ms Gamuchirai Sibongile Zimunhu said their release may result in the public losing confidence in the justice delivery system and, end up causing public despondence.
Ms Zimunhu also expressed fears that Mpofu and Chimombe may interfere with investigations if released on bail.
Asked by prosecutor Mr Anesu Chirenje to elaborate, Ms Zimunhu said: “You will note that on the 24th of June, they came to our offices and started shooting videos on the matter,” she said.
“They also had a press conference with issues which were under investigation.
“This case is of public interest and if released, public disorder may arise and the people will no longer trust in the justice system.”
Ms Zimunhu told the court that ZACC has documentary evidence obtained from Government ministries and agencies, including “forged tax clearance certificates”.
Mpofu and Chimombe are being represented by Mr Tapson Dzvetero and Arshiel Mugiya.
The hearing will continue on Friday.
Harare Regional Magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa presided.
