A new film chronicling the life of the Munhumutapa Empire under Nyatsimba Mutota is set to be completed by May 2025.

Titled ‘Munhumutapa: The Rise of an Empire,’ the film is being produced and directed by Stephen Mutsago.

This cinematic endeavour connects the historical achievements of the empire to the contemporary aspirations of Zimbabwe’s Second Republic, aiming to inspire national pride and cultural heritage.

It marks the first installment of an ambitious eight-part series designed to encapsulate the rich heritage and legacy of the Mutapa Empire, all set against the backdrop of the nation’s future aspirations.

Production began on December 2, 2024, with themes of visionary leadership, economic growth, and infrastructural development that resonate strongly with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail, Mutsago emphasized that revisiting the legacy of Mutota will remind audiences of their cultural heritage and the resilience that defines the spirit of the nation.

“Revisiting the legacy of Nyatsimba Mutota through our film ‘Munhumutapa’ will serve as a poignant reminder of our rich cultural heritage and the unyielding resilience that characterises our nation,” he stated.

“By reliving the epic journey of our ancestors, we hope to inspire a sense of pride, identity, and unity among Zimbabweans, rekindling the flame of our collective history that continues to shape our present and future.”

Mutsago also noted the striking parallels between Mutota’s vision and the Second Republic’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

“Just as Nyatsimba Mutota’s wise leadership and strategic trade relations propelled the Mutapa State to greatness, the Second Republic’s commitment to economic growth, food self-sufficiency, and international cooperation is poised to usher Zimbabwe into a new era of prosperity and development.”

He pointed out that the Second Republic has implemented command agriculture, built dams, and promoted irrigation to ensure food security and economic stability.

“This commitment to food security is a testament to the enduring legacy of Nyatsimba Mutota’s vision for a prosperous and self-sufficient nation. By prioritising food security and economic growth, the Government emulates the wise leadership of our ancestors.”

“As we reflect on our history, we are reminded that the keys to our prosperity lie in our ability to work together towards a common goal, just as Nyatsimba Mutota did centuries ago,” he added.

The film features several renowned celebrities, including Alois Bunjira, Tinashe Nengomasha, Charles Mzemba, and Freddy Manjalima, affectionately known as Kapfupi, among other prominent figures.
