A Municipal Traffic Police Training Programme has been launched in Harare.
The training programme is aimed at empowering municipal traffic officers with necessary skills to deal with traffic congestion and to enforce traffic regulations.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), in conjunction with municipal traffic police have been intensifying traffic operations and ensuring traffic regulations are observed in the central business district (CBD).
Minister of Local Government and Public Works July Moyo officiated at the launch yesterday.
Minister Moyo applauded the efforts by both the ZRP and Harare City Council for enforcing road traffic regulations in the CBD.
“More than 3 209 vehicles have been impounded and a total of 1 001 vehicles towed away to the secure compound, 4572 vendors and 557 touts were arrested.
“Traffic enforcement needs to be resourced in terms of tow vehicles, motor cycles and heavy duty tow vehicles, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has seen it fit to disburse $55 million dollars towards resource mobilisation,” said Minister Moyo.
Statistics from Central Vehicle Registry show that about 1,5 million vehicles are plying the CBD, a significant increase over the years that has led to traffic congestion during peak hours.
Government is already working on decongesting the CBD.
