Mzansi Magic is set to turn up the drama this June with the premiere of its new telenovela Kwa Baba, a culturally rich production that promises love, betrayal, tradition, and family conflict.
The series will premiere on June 1 on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161), airing weekdays at 7:30PM.
At the heart of the story is Zwelakhe Mkhize, played by Vuyo Biyela, a young businessman determined to build a successful future with the woman he loves. However, his dreams are shaken when he is forced to confront a traditional obligation linked to his late father’s unpaid debt. The role of Zwelakhe’s love interest is played by Rorisang Mohapi-Grootboom, known for her appearances in Gqeberha: The Empire and Kwa-Tsholo.
As the drama unfolds, viewers will see Zwelakhe caught between modern love and cultural expectations, raising the question of how much one person can sacrifice for family and tradition. Veteran actress Hlengiwe Lushaba-Madlala stars as MaMbokazi, Zwelakhe’s strong-willed mother, determined to protect her family and reputation while dealing with painful secrets from the past.
The telenovela also features an impressive supporting cast that includes Mpho J Molepo, Helen Lebepe, Lindani Nkosi, Nkanyiso Mzimela, Kwanele Mthethwa, Sparky Xulu, and Phumzile Mlangeni.
Speaking about the production, Mzansi Magic director Of Local Entertainment Channels Shirley Adonisi said the channel remains committed to telling authentic African stories that resonate with audiences.
“We are passionate about telling stories that reflect the realities our audiences live every day, especially where tradition and modern life intersect,” she said.
Set in Msawawa, Diepkloof Extension, Kwa Baba follows the journey of a first-born son who must embrace leadership, honour family legacy, and navigate the complexities of love and responsibility.
The production is handled by Singa Vision Productions, the team behind Genesis, with the new telenovela also reflecting Mzansi Magic’s continued drive to empower emerging producers and storytellers.
