THE Plumtree Town Council secretary Davis Luthe, has welcomed proposals by Bulawayo Chiefs to change their name to one that would appeal to the community at the border town.
Chiefs gained promotion into the Premiership while using dilapidated Dingumuzi Stadium as their home ground.
Luthe believes it would be a dream for Plumtree to have a team in the top flight league using a name that appealed to the community there.
“The name on its own has a major impact to the community, imagine the team being called Plumtree Chiefs, it would make local people happy and identify with the team,” said Luthe.
Bulawayo Chiefs are set to finalise the issue of a new name today as they continue with off-season preparations for next year.
Luthe praised Bulawayo Chiefs for their decision to keep their roots where they enjoyed support during their promotion campaign.
He said the town council is fully behind Chiefs and would work with the team in constructing a new sports facility to be used as the team’s home ground.
Chiefs’ secretary-general Dumisani Mantula Sibanda confirmed that they had agreed with Plumtree Town Council on the construction of a new stadium.
Dingumuzi Stadium has no room for expansion.
“The site has been identified, we have agreed to partner with the council, now we just have to agree on legal terms,” said Sibanda
Sibanda said they want to build a stadium like Maglas Stadium of Zvishabane, because of the time left before the new season kicks off.
“We have met the contractors that did Maglas Stadium they have promised that they can work on the stadium in three to four months. We just have to finalise with the council then everything will be ready,” he said.
Sibanda said their victory celebrations would be held on 30 November at the town.
