The Zimbabwe Senior Swimming Championships got underway at Les Brown Swimming Pool in Harare on Thursday evening.
The championships, which are being run by the Zimbabwe Aquatic Union (ZAU), will run until February 21.
According to a brief statement issued by Zimbabwe Swimming chairperson Tracey Doorman, 215 athletes have already registered for the competition.
“We are expecting more athletes from all over the country, and the event promises to be a real showcase of our senior swimmers and their talents.
“All top senior swimmers who are locally based will be there, including most who attended the AUSC Region Five Games in Lesotho last year in December,” said Doorman.
Heats for the 50m butterfly will get the championships underway, followed by the boys and girls 400m freestyle finals.
Among leading swimmers expected to light up the championships are Donata Katai, who gave a commendable performance for Team Zimbabwe at the Tokyo Olympic Games last year.
Teenage sensation Mikayla Makwabarara, who set the bar high when she broke a long-standing 100m freestyle record, is also expected to be part of the cast that will take to the pool.
Others expected to keep spectators on the edge of their seats are Ryan Franceys, Timea Schultz and Bulawayo Province pair of Recce Rollo and Dylan Lee.
