LOCAL youth organisation – Teen Rescue Mission Trust (TRMT) – has rescued more than 500 youths who were abusing drugs in Chitungwiza.

The organisation empowers youth and vulnerable women by offering them various opportunities in education and skills development.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online ahead of the World Women’s Day commemmorations pencilled in  for March 8, TRMT director Mr Mafara Matuka said empowering youth is akin to creating health and wealth among youngsters.

“We have rescued over 500 drug and substance abusers in Chitungwiza and Harare. We have also empowered more than 220 youths with career assistance, with 134 of them partaking in life skill training courses,” said Mr Matuka.

“Empowering youth reduces drugs and substance abuse, and early pregnancy and crime. Young people need to be occupied to avoid thinking about drugs.”

Some of the beneficiaries who talked to this publication said the initiatives by this local organisation have drastically changed their lives.

Ms Primrose Maswaure, a single mother of one who was assisted to take a course in dressmaking, said: “I was abandoned by my boyfriend when I got pregnant at a tender age and am appreciating Teen Rescue Mission Trust for facilitating my life skill course, which has been fully paid up.”

TRMT seeks to fight drug and substance abuse, early pregnancy and crime in teens and youths, and promoting empowerment programmes.
