MORE than 500 households are sitting on a health time bomb after going for a week without a drop of water coming out of their tapes in the Dreamhouse suburb of Mutare as timeworn infrastructure takes its toll on the local authority’s ability to consistently supply the precious liquid.
A recent visit to the suburb revealed a sorry sight of long queues of residents fetching water from a bowser while a few fortunate ones with vehicles could be seen driving along the bumpy dust roads laden with water containers.
Nisbert Mapaike, a resident of the area, said: “This has become unbearable for us. The City fathers really need to come to our rescue. We have not had water for the past seven days here in Dreamhouse, day and night. We are now fearing for the worst as far as our health is concerned because of this acute water shortage.”
Lynette Sithole said: “We have had water supply challenges in the past and we had become accustomed to it but this time around it has been severe. Having no water supply for seven days consecutively is not easy at all.”
When contacted for comment, City of Mutare spokesperson Mr Spren Mutiwi said: “We have a series of water bursts in Hobhouse and Zimta that has disrupted water supplies in Dreamhouse. Water bowsers have been deployed to provide relief to the residents and our teams are working round the clock to complete repairs of the burs water pipes and restore water supply.”
