HEAVY rains in excess of 50mm and accompanied by lightning and hailstorms are expected in some parts of the country from tomorrow (Thursday) until Tuesday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecast.
The localised rains are expected in northern parts of Manicaland, Harare and Bulawayo metropolitan provinces, the three Mashonaland provinces, Matabeleland North and northern parts of Midlands before spreading southwards to Matabeleland South and Masvingo next week.
Issuing an advisory of the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the MSD advised the public to watch out for lightning, strong winds and hailstorms, urging people to stay indoors during the thunderstorms unless there was an emergency.
“Moisture should start drifting into the country from Zambia through all Mashonaland provinces from December 29 (tomorrow).
“This should gradually spread southwards to cover Matabeleland North, northern parts of Midlands, northern districts of Manicaland, Bulawayo Metropolitan and Harare Metropolitan Provinces into New Year, with a cloud band expected to enhance rainfall over Matabeleland South and Masvingo provinces during the first week of January,” said the MSD.
The MSD said much of the country should receive rain showers by the close of the first week of January.
Added the MSD: “If travel is necessary, please, take caution on the roads as visibility may be reduced and there may be hidden flood dangers. Do not attempt t cross flooded rivers on foot or in vehicles.”
