WORK at the Trabablas Interchange has been “temporarily halted” to allow the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) and relevant authorities to conduct “a thorough investigation” into the fatal accident that claimed the life of one worker.

The incident was reportedly caused by machinal failure during crane de-erection operations.

NSSA said it has been actively conducting inspections and training at the construction site and no immediate safety violations were reported.

“We call upon all employers and employees to pay attention to their duties and responsibilities towards avoiding accidents, diseases and fatalities,” reads part of the statement.

“Only trained and competent operators are permitted to handle lifting appliances.

“Employers must notify the Authority on any complex construction projects to enable us to assist in promoting and enforcing the safety of workers through regular monitoring, inspections and training.”

NSSA has pledged to take necessary actions to address any safety lapses that may have contributed to the incident.
