THROUGH the ‘donate a leave day’ campaign, the Old Mutual Women’s Network yesterday donated at least $1,2 million worth of material for prison garb to Mutare Farm Prison.

Old Mutual Women’s Network vice president Mrs Hazel Chitare said as employees of Old Mutual Zimbabwe, they fundraised by donating their leave days to the cause and raised at least $600 000.

“After we raised that money as individual employees, the Old Mutual Group marketing division then doubled the amount that we had raised by donating that same amount.

“The initiative was ours as the Old Mutual Women’s Network but everyone from Old Mutual joined in and contributed,” she said.

They donated 540 metres of orange coloured material meant for the tailoring of prison uniforms for inmates.

“These are part of our corporate social responsibility activities that we are doing across the country and across all communities that we are working in. We want our incarcerated brothers and sisters to realise that we are here for them and will cater for their needs whenever we can,” said Mrs Chitare.

In partnership with Old Mutual Women’s Network, Celebration Church’s Mutare region also donated toiletries and snacks for the inmates.

Together, they made possible a party for the inmates at Mutare Farm Prison.

Officer Commanding Manicaland, Commissioner Spetosomusa Moyo-Chinobva expressed gratitude to Old Mutual Women’s Network and Celebration Church for the donations saying the philanthropic deed will go a long way in making the lives of the inmates comfortable.

“An achievement of this nature rightfully positions the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services to fulfill its constitutional mandate. From this donation, our inmates feel the love and compassion of the community that they so much require for their successful rehabilitation and eventual reintegration,” she said.
