UNDER-20 football teams in the Zifa Eastern Region jurisdiction are competing for the top gong in the inaugural edition of the age group contest which started at various venues across the region today.
The Zifa Eastern Region comprises Manicaland, Masvingo and Mashonaland East provinces.
In Manicaland, matches took place at Elis Gledhill High School in Mutare while the Lowveld teams clashed at Chishamiso Stadium in Chiredzi.
In Mashonaland East, competing teams used Chiremba Ground in Ruwa.
With players to be selected from the competing teams, a regional Under-20 team will then battle for supremacy against other regions in a move aimed at trying to bring back the glory days of vibrant junior football in the country.
Zifa Eastern Region chairman Davison Muchena said: “Today is the big day where our Under-20 provincial team selection will be done. The teams have been grouped into four clusters namely Masvingo Urban, Lowveld, Manicaland and Mashonaland East province,” he said.
The Lowveld group comprises Traingle’s Ramangwana, Hippo Valley, Chiredzi Select, Renco Mine and Greenfuel while Manicaland includes PSL and Division One Select, Majesa, Mutare Select A and Mutare Select B.
Mashonaland East group comprises Division One select, Power 11, Rusununguko and
Goromonzi while Masvingo has Division One Select, Zaka Academy, Dewure and
Pamusnana.
The Zifa Eastern Region boss said school teams had indicated transport challenges but a solution would be put in place by end of day today.
“The school teams have complained about transport so their position is unknown until later on in the day.”
The games kicked off in a round robin format while a panel of coaches will select the best performing players to represent the region.
