“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success”. Henry Ford
The sun rises on December 22, a day of national significance in Zimbabwe. A day that commemorates the merger of two political parties ZANU and ZAPU on December 22 1987. A day that celebrates the spirit of togetherness and promotes peace, unity and reconciliation among Zimbabweans. As we celebrate Unity Day, let us reflect on the importance of these values and how companies can promote them through their customer service.
Today, I will explore some of the ways companies can use to enhance customer service in their quest to promote a sense of unity among their customers, while also improving customer satisfaction.
In line with the tenets of Unity Day here are the steps
- Emphasise the importance of unity
Companies can use their social media platforms, websites, and other communication channels to emphasise the importance of unity and promote messages of peace and reconciliation. They can also use the Zimbabwean flag or other national symbols like the Zimbabwe Bird in their branding to show their support for the country’s unity.
They can give a uniform quality of service to all customers without looking at their political affiliations or societal social standing. This will make customers feel equal and not inferior or superior and it makes practicing good customer service easier.
- Celebrate Diversity
Zimbabwe is a diverse country with different cultures, traditions and languages. It has about 16 official languages. Companies can celebrate diversity by promoting products or services that cater to different cultural groups.
Another way to promote diversity is by offering training programmes for employees on topics such as unconscious bias, cultural sensitivity, and diversity and inclusion in the workplace. This can help employees become more aware of their own biases and learn how to interact with people from different backgrounds in a respectful and inclusive manner.
- Promote Local Products
Companies can promote local products and services to support Zimbabwean businesses and encourage economic growth. The Buy Zimbabwe initiative is a foot in the right direction as it supports purchasing and consumption of local goods and services. This can help to create a sense of pride in locally produced goods. For instance, organisations can host a food festival featuring Zimbabwean dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.
In a bid to promote local products, companies can offer special discounts or promote locally made goods. This can encourage customers to try new local products and support local. They can even use social media to promote local products and share stories about the people and communities behind them.
- Encourage community involvement
Companies can encourage their employees to get involved in community service projects or volunteer work. This can help to build stronger ties between the company and the local community, and promote a sense of unity among Zimbabweans. Cultural festivals that include music, dance and food can be used to create a sense of oneness in a celebratory mood.
- Provide excellent customer service
They can provide excellent customer service to all customers, regardless of their background or beliefs. The companies’ customer service representatives must be well-informed about the holiday and its significance. They can also offer special promotions or discounts to customers to celebrate the holiday. Additionally, companies can use this opportunity to give back to the community by donating a portion of their profits to local charities or organisations that support the ideals of unity and peace. This can help to create a positive image of the company and promote a sense of unity among Zimbabweans.
As we celebrate Unity Day, let us remember the importance of peace, unity, and reconciliation in our country. Companies can play a vital role in promoting these values by enhancing customer service and promoting a sense of unity among their customers. It’s prudent that companies must follow the above steps in order to create a more united and prosperous Zimbabwe. Let us work together to build a brighter future for our country and our people.
