The Palestine Embassy in Harare has partnered ZUJ and has committed to sponsor an annual journalistic award in memory of the late PLO leader Yaser Arafat.
The Yaser Arafat Reporter of the Year Award will be incorporated into this year’s National Journalism and Media Awards (Njama) as a way of highlighting foreign relations issues and Press Freedom violations in Palestine and the Gaza strip.
This followed a meeting held today between Ambassador of the State of Palestine in Harare Tamer Almassri and the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) to discuss issues of mutual interest.
The get-together was instigated by the ambassador and was held at the offices of the Palestine Embassy in Harare. ZUJ President Michael Chideme and the Union’s programmes officer, Eric Matingo, attended the discussions.
The meeting also resolved to strenghten relations between ZUJ and journalists organisations in Palestine. Part of which will include sending a delegation of Zimbabwean journalists to Palestine and Jerusalem for cultural exchange programmes.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Almassri said he “highly appreciates freedom of speech” and already considered “himself as part of the ZUJ family”while Chideme thanked the ambassador for “the support that the embassy pledged”.
