NEW: Police investigate alleged death of pregnant 14-year-old

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has begun investigations into the alleged death of 14-year-old Memory Machaya at a church shrine in Marange.

Memory is reported to have died while giving birth at a shrine in Mutare.

It is believed she could have been saved had she been referred to a medical facility.

In a statement on Friday, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations into the case are underway.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of print and social media reports and inquiries on the alleged death of Memory Machaya (14) at a church shrine in Marange recently.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is now conducting investigations into the case. More information will be released soon.”
