The power station will be based at Entuba coalfields.
The new power station will help improve Zimbabwe’s power generation, which currently fails to meet national demand.
The country is at the moment producing around 1 200 MW of electricity against demand of about 2 000 MW.
Hytoric Enterprises will operate as Southern Energy, and has already submitted its application to Zera.
“Notice is hereby given that the Zimbabwe Electricity Regulatory Authority has received an application from Hytoric Enterprises trading as Southern Energy to construct, own, operate and maintain a 600 MW coal-fired power generating station for the purpose of the generation and supply of electricity to ZETDC and other customers in Zimbabwe,” Zera said in a statement.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) is the subsidiary of power utility Zesa Holdings responsible for power distribution.
In the public notice issued, Zera is inviting representations for or against the new power station before the licence is granted.
The electricity regulator has granted 11 other investors licences to establish power stations in the country.
The projects, which are estimated to be operational in the next three to 10 years, are valued at $10 billion and have the potential to produce 5 400 MW. — New Ziana
