TITLE aspirants, Manica Diamonds failed to capitalise on the slip-up by fellow contenders, Ngezi Platinum Stars and Dynamos to cover ground and reduce the points gap in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League race when all the three teams dropped crucial points in the weekend fixtures.
The Gem Boys fell 0-2 to newcomers Sheasham away at Bata Stadium in Gweru last week on Saturday, while log leaders, Madamburo were beaten 1-0 by Hwange in the Colliery conundrum the following day.
DeMbare were held to a 0-0 by relegation-threatened Black Rhinos on the same day.
After the weekend fixtures, the Mhondoro-based side (57 points) still retain pole position, while the Harare giants leapfrogged the diamond miners into second place.
Defending champions FC Platinum (50) are fourth, tied on points with Dynamos and Manica Diamonds.
Former early pacesetters Highlanders dropped into fifth position on 49 points.
The championship race entered MatchDay 30 at the weekend, with four rounds of fixtures left to play to decide who gets crowned as the champions of domestic football.
With 12 points to play for before the campaign concludes, the top five teams are still fancying their chances of clinching the coveted prize.
Meanwhile, GreenFuel continued with their march to safety from relegation after defeating Bulawayo Chiefs 1-0.
They remain in 11th position, tied with CAPS United, on 38 points.
