President Mnangagwa on Wednesday commissioned a dry mortar plant at Lafarge Zimbabwe headquarters in Mabvuku.
A dry mortar plant is a production line that produces all kinds of mortar and plaster such as agricultural lime and adhesives.
Lafarge’s new US$2,8 million plant, which was designed in Turkey and assembled by four local companies, will improve the manufacturing capacity of dry mortar products from the current 7 000 tonnes to 100 000 tonnes per annum.
The project is part of Lafarge Holcim Group’s US$25 million additional investment in its Zimbabwean subsidiary announced in 2019.
Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe chief executive officer Mrs Precious Nyika said the project was the largest investment the company has made since 1956.
“The launch is the first phase of the company’s expansion project, with the second phase set to be done next January with the commissioning of a vertical cement mixer plant.
“We thank the Government for according to the plant a National Project status, which enabled the plant to be constructed smoothly,” she said.
