NEW: Government closely monitoring prices of basic goods

THE Government says it is closely monitoring prices and availability of essential commodities to safeguard consumer purchasing power.

The items include mealie-meal, bread, sugar, rice, cooking oil, eggs, beef, chicken and soap.

In a post-Cabinet media briefing statement on Tuesday, authorities noted that the current monetary and fiscal environment, characterised by price and exchange rate stability, is contributing to improved access and affordability of basic goods.

Cabinet acknowledged positive feedback from the business community, with formal retail operators reporting higher sales volumes.

This has been attributed to enhanced compliance, fair trading practices and improved market discipline promoted by the Task Force on Business Malpractices, which continues to conduct inspections across all provinces.

Substandard products identified during operations have been confiscated and destroyed.

“The stability observed in commodity prices, coupled with adequate stock levels across most retail outlets, reflects growing alignment between regulatory enforcement and private sector interests,” the statement said.
