THE Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has hailed the Presidential agricultural schemes for contributing to ensuring food security in the country.
This came out during FAO sub-regional office for Southern Africa’s three-day 16th Multidisciplinary team meeting held in Harare this week.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online on the sidelines of the meeting, FAO assistant director-general and regional representative, Dr Abebe Haile-Gabriel said:
“We are very glad that the leadership of Zimbabwe came up with these Presidential initiatives.
“In Africa and Zimbabwe, unless we address the agri-food systems and the challenges that agriculture is faced, we will not be in a position to transform our economies.
“Most of our population live in rural areas; they depend on agriculture, and that system needs to be modernised.”
Dr Haile-Gabriel said the Presidential agricultural programmes will contribute to suppressing the challenges of hunger and malnutrition.
He said FAO will continue working with Government in implementing people-centred programmes.
