NEW: Presidential input schemes spur seed industry growth

Online Reporter

Presidential input schemes, such as the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme have significantly contributed to the growth of the seed industry, an independent study has revealed.

According to a preliminary report of a study done by The African Seed Access Index (TASAI), Government was the biggest buyer of maize seed in 2021, absorbing 46 percent of the sold product.

Government was also the leading buyer of soya bean (36 percent) and sorghum (31 percent) in the same year.

Commenting on the findings of the study during the official launch of the preliminary report in Harare on Tuesday, researcher, Dr Claid Mujaju said Government input schemes were a big market that has kept the seed industry afloat.

“We should be really clapping hands for this because much of what the industry players produce already has the market,” he said.

Government is targeting over three million households through Pfumvudza this year.
