New primary school for Gwanda

THE Gwanda Municipality has started constructing a primary school in the Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle suburb, a development expected to help decongest schools in the mining town.

Last year, the municipality availed 11 hectares of land towards the construction of Hlalani Kuhle Primary School. In a telephone interview, Gwanda Town Clerk Ms Priscilla Nkala said they have already started constructing the first classroom block with the school operations set to commence mid next year.

“We are in the process of constructing a primary school in the Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle area and we expect the school to be functional by mid next year. The construction comes as at the current moment the area does not have any school either for primary or secondary learners,” said Ms Nkala.

The town has only five primary schools namely Jahunda Primary School, St Christopher’s Primary School, Mount Cazalet Primary School, Senondo Primary School and Gwanda Adventist Primary School.

“In future if our resources are enough, we will also construct a secondary school as we want to fully address the issue of shortages of schools in the town,” she said.

The council has on record indicated that there is need for five more primary schools and four secondary schools. In addition, interested parties have been urged to invest in construction of the schools.
