ZIMBABWE professional golfers are contemplating forming a new tour to be named Memorial Tour aimed at celebrating the exploits of some of the game’s late professionals.
The tour is being spearheaded by former Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association presidents Day Muyambo and Tongo Charamba who are working with former secretary-general Richard Chitakatira as well as Ignatius Mketekete and Peter Banda.
Tour representative, Richard Chitakatira, said they were looking forward to having some memorial tournaments in honour of some late golfers who helped develop the game.
“We are looking forward to forming a new tour which will celebrate some of our late local golf icons.
”We have several professionals who did a lot for the sport and we hope to honour them.
“Our aim is to help develop local golfers who do not usually get a lot of opportunities.
”We are expecting to remember and celebrate some players like Lewis Chitengwa, Eliya Fero, Vengesai Phiri, Marko Chimsoro, Anderson Rusike, and Nicholas Nyamazana among several others.
“We are not coming to compete with the ZPGA but to give a large platform for local golfers to showcase their talent,” said Chitakatira.
The ZPGA already have a Nasho Kamungeremu Memorial Tournament in honour of the late local player who played on the Canadian Tour.
The Kamungeremu Memorial made its maiden appearance on the ZPGA Tour last year and was won by Steven Ferreira.
Kamungeremu is a former ZPGA president who died from a heart attack on August 3, 2007, at the Avenues Clinic just a few hours after presiding over a tournament.
