However, G-Records proprietors who are also the producers Tatenda “Klasiq” Chideme and Shingi “Gwagz” Mugwagwa have come up with a unique package to promote local hip-hop.
“We understand that hip-hop is not growing here in Zimbabwe, of all the genres it is one of the slowest growing genres locally and yet it is one of the most successful genres in the world.
“We have noticed that there is a lot of talent here, talent that many will agree is better than elsewhere on the continent as seen on Trace TV and Channel O music channels, so we want to find the best artistes to support and take on Africa,” said Gwagz.
Located in the Basement Nightspot at the corner of Leopold Takawira Street and Samora Machel Avenue, the stable has produced a number of tracks that are getting airplay on local urban music centred radio stations Zi-FM and Star FM.
“Good Intention’s Hometown” and “Ndere Mahara” by Sharky and Savage are getting fair airplay on the airwaves as well as on the internet.
“Ndere Mahara” is party anthem similar to Junior Brown’s “Happy” which is about revellers enjoying themselves.
Some critics say “Ndere Mahara” will ride on the success of “Happy”.
“This song has brought a fresh perspective to local hip-hop, Savage and Sharky and the whole G-Records family, ” said Innocent Chitowa, known to many as Plan B in the local hip-hop circles.
Zimbabwean hip-hop has a considerable number of fans but it has been growing slowly because of a lack of funding and investor interest.
Hip-hop artistes, among them the late Tonderai Makoni aka Kingpinn, MC Chita, Junior Brown, Tehn Diamond and award- winning rappers Alishias “Maskiri’ Musimbe as well as Desmond “Stunner” Chideme have done well in and outside the country with their club bangers.
