“The thrust of the new pageant is to promote beauty with a purpose that is centred on helping charity. We have engaged a number of African countries and so far South Africa, Botswana, DRC, Namibia, Zambia, Lesotho and Cameroon have confirmed their participation,” she said.
Mushaninga highlighted that unlike the former pageant, Diamond Queen of Africa was going to see two representatives from participating countries battling it out for six titles.
“Of the six titles, the most superior will be the Diamond Queen of Africa. Other titles, however, will be for the best charity project, fitness, most photogenic, best cultural dress and for the best traditional dish contest,” she said.
Reigning Miss Carnival Dananai Chipunza will also be a part of the show as she will be hosting the traditional food contest at a lodge in Glen Lorne.
“We realise the importance of culture so we thought it would be nice to have the contestants prepare national dishes from their respective countries with the help of their local embassies. The best dish will be chosen at a food festival,” added Chipunza.
The organisers also said winners of the pageant would get a chance to work with models against hunger for Africa. They would engage in different charity programmes as well as being ambassadors around the continent.
Although they did not rule out a flashy car for the ultimate winner, the organisers highlighted that they were in the process of engaging local and regional sponsors for lucrative prizes.
So far Delta Beverages, Pandhari Lodge, Zi-FM and a South African advertising firm have partnered with the pageant. They, however, said more sponsors were welcome to come on board.
The pageant will take place on August 16 at the Harare International Conference Centre. Local casting calls will be held on July 20.
