A NEW road race that will exclusively feature women and girls has been launched in Harare and is set to be a permanent feature on the local athletics calendar.

The National All Women’s Race will be staged on July 26 and will have a 10km run as the main event.

The 10km race is set to start at Town House and finish at the National Sports Stadium, according to the event’s organiser, Lindiwe Chipayi.

“I heard that there was once a road race for women, which was organised by (the late) Bill Magness, many years ago and I thought of reviving such an event. “Our National All Women’s Road Race will be held on July 26, starting from Town House and finishing at the National Sports Stadium.

“We hope this competition will encourage more women to take part in sports and at the same time live a healthy lifestyle.

“Generally, women and girls are marginalised in sports but we have decided to host a competition where it will all be about them,” said Chipayi.

As a way of encouraging many athletes, Chipayi said registration for the event will be free while all participants will receive token prizes.

“There is no fee for registration and this is meant to encourage many women and girls to come and participate,” said Chipayi. Chipayi said top female runners will take part in the professional category while the other divisions will be wheelchairs, primary schools, secondary schools, veterans and community women.
