RUSAPE’S Ward Four councillor, Councillor Lovemore Chifomboti of Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC) was on Wednesday elected to be chairman of the second largest urban settlement in the province.

He will be deputised by Ward 10 councillor, Councillor Shylet Mutisi.

CCC has nine councillors, and the ruling Zanu PF party has four members.

Councillor Chifomboti got nine votes against Alderman Clever Chimuse who managed nine.

Councillor Mutisi was elected unopposed.

In an interview, Councillor Chifomboti said he was humbled to be chosen to lead the town that is eyeing municipal status.

He said despite being from the opposition, his council will strive to work well with Central Government for the benefit of residents.

“I am happy and humbled to be elected as the leader of this council, and I hope that we will work hard as a team to improve service delivery. We want to address the water issue, and we will carry out a comprehensive study to ascertain whether the problem is at the pump stations or the distribution channels.

“The other issue that need urgent attention is the sewer system which is now old and overwhelmed. This is leading to perennial bursts which expose residents to diseases. We have to address the issue of fires as council is operating without a proper fire tender and residents are losing property due to the fires. Acquiring a fire tender is our top priority,” said Councillor Chifomboti.

He added: “There are also pending labour issues that we need to attend to diligently so that council is not prejudiced. We promise to work well with all the stakeholders especially residents and Central Government. We will have an open door policy and embrace ideas and advice that helps to push the town forward.”
